There’s nothing more perfect for a summer side dish than fresh green beans cooked to perfection or used as an ingredient in a summer pasta or casserole. May starts the peak season of green beans, so you’ve probably seen a lot more of them around the product section of your local grocery store or at the farmer’s market. Fresh green beans aren’t just delicious and healthy, they’re also very versatile when it comes to flavor. You can keep it simple and use a little salt and pepper, or you can get more creative and complex with seasonings including opting for a sweeter blend of spices and sauces. The sky really is the limit when it comes to finding new ways to cook green beans.
I’m personally a fan of stir frying them because it really brings out the flavor of the green beans, and it’s quick and simple. But, let’s take a look at a few of the most common methods for cooking. As usual, start with the basics and once you’re stir frying fresh green beans like a pro, start experimenting with spices, marinades, and other combos!
How to Stir Fry Green Beans
Start by washing the green beans in cold water. Cut off the ends of the green beans to get rid of the skinny stems that grow on the end. Next, heat olive oil in skillet over medium heat. Once the oil has heated up, add a tablespoon of minced garlic. Cook garlic until it’s slightly brown, and add fresh green beans. Stir quickly so that the beans don’t burn. Add salt to taste and serve warm.
How to Cook Green Beans in the Oven (Baked Green Beans)
Wash 1/2 pound of green beans and cut off the stems at the end. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with foil. Mix green beans in a bowl with 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon of vinegar. Mix together, making sure to evenly coat the olive oil mixture on all sides. Spread evenly on the baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the outside is slightly crisp. When you take out, grate a little bit of parmesan cheese on top and serve warm.
How to Cook Green Beans on the Grill
Wash 1/2 pound of green beans and remove the stems. Preheat the grill to medium heat. Toss green beans in a mixing bowl with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of pepper, 1 teaspoon of water, and 1 teaspoon of minced garlic. Once covered thoroughly, lay a piece of aluminum foil on a table. Spread the green beans on top and add another sheet of aluminum foil on top to create a packet. Pinch the sides together to close securely and put on the grill. Grill for 15-20 minutes. Take off the grill and serve warm.
