We recently spent a week talking about the Kitchen of the Future – how technology could completely change how we eat, how our environment could dictate what kinds of food we can grow, and what kitchen gadgets will look like in the future. In fact, we envisioned a completely new kitchen concept that utilizes robotics and high-tech storage to automate nearly every aspect of the cooking experience. Unfortunately, technology hasn’t quite caught up with our vision. But there are some pretty brilliant high-tech kitchen gadgets that CAN make your kitchen easier and more fun to use. Here’s seven of our favorite high-tech kitchen gadgets.

  1. Days Ago Digital Counter – The Days Ago digital counter is a nifty little device that keeps track of how long a specific food item has been opened, so that you can make sure you’re not eating potentially spoiled food. They only cost $8 each, and can actually be used for a number of other household tasks such as when you last watered the tomatoes outside and the last time you took your vitamins.
  1. Thermomix – We know – we sing the praises of Thermomix all of the time. But it’s for good reason! The Thermomix does a brilliant job of automating a range of common food prep and cooking actions. From mixing, blending, weighing, whipping – even emulsifying ingredients, Thermomix is a kind of all-in-one cooking and food prep gadget that’s pretty much the height of automated cooking today.
  1. Prep Pad – Prep Pad is a smart countertop that looks like a cutting board and wirelessly integrates with other smart appliances like the Smart Crock Pot and the Vitamix. It acts as a digital scale and also learns what ingredients you like and dislike, and will even suggest meals and recipes. It also logs what you’re cooking and can integrate with the Jawbone bracelet and app.
  1. simplehuman Sensor Can – People generally don’t think of trash cans as being an integral part of the cooking experience, but they actually are. The Sensor Can uses gesture control to open up the trash can lid, making it a breeze to get rid of waste when your hands are covered with marinades and other messes.
  1. Click and Grow – We love growing herbs, but sometimes space is an issue. If you don’t have space for a garden (or if you have more of a red thumb rather than a green thumb), the Click and Grow system might be perfect. Choose an herb cartridge (dill, basil, thyme, etc.), pop it into the box, add water, plug it in, and you’re good to go. The system will remind you when to add water and will monitor the health of the plants through sensors that measure oxygen and nutrient levels.
  1. Pantelligent – Pantelligent is a smart frying pan that uses an app to help you cook the perfect steak, chicken, or fish. You add in some characteristics about whatever you’re cooking (type of food, thickness, size, weight) and it lets you know how long to cook it and when to flip it over.
  1. SpreadTHAT Heated Butter Knife – This kitchen gadget is simple, but incredibly useful. It actually uses your body as a conductor of heat to warm the butter knife, making butter easier to spread. How cool is that?
