Smart technology is permeating every inch of our lives, from thermostats that analyze our temperature preferences and configure the inside temperature to smart locks that open with the press of a button on our smartphones. Nothing is immune from the advancements of technology – even the kitchen.
We dedicated a whole week last year to the Kitchen of the Future, where we covered everything from innovative new fabrics and cooking attire for chefs; technological advances in kitchen appliances; and the design process for major kitchen brands. But if this had existed then, we would have definitely covered it in our series, because hello – a smart skillet? Brilliant.
Pantelligent (which, by the way, is also a brilliant name) is a skillet that helps you cook everything from meat to vegetables at the correct temperature, resulting in food that’s cooked properly and just tastes better. The technology works by embedding a thermometer into the bottom of the pan. This sensor allows the pan to perfectly track the temperature of whatever you’re cooking, while it sends that data to an app on your phone. The app syncs up with all kinds of cooking to-do’s and recipes to help you prep and cook your food at the ideal temperature and for the right period of time.
What’s even cooler, though, is that it walks you through the cooking process, step-by-step by alerting you when you need to flip over that pork chop or when the salmon is done. You don’t even have to stare at your phone screen, as the app has voice alerts to help you out – just like a GPS, but for your food.
While professional chefs may think this constitutes cheating (and they may be correct on some level), the real beauty of this smart skillet is that it helps teach people about the role heat plays in cooking and creating a meal. That, in turn, helps people become better cooks. And when people become better cooks, they become more experimental in the kitchen – and that’s what we’re all about.
