Unless you’ve been to culinary school or are expertly trained in the art of cooking, you may not realize that there’s a right way and a wrong way to measure ingredients. And that’s especially true for dry ingredients.

Don’t worry – it’s not rocket science and it’s easy to learn. The tools you’ll need for measuring dry ingredients are a set of measuring cups and a set of measuring spoons. You’ll also want to grab a butter knife while you’re at it.

How to Measure Dry Ingredients

Measuring dry ingredients is pretty simple, but you do need to make sure you pay attention to how well you’re measuring. Once you get some solid cooking experience under your belt, it becomes easier to wing it when you need certain ingredients. A quarter teaspoon of salt? You can eyeball it. But baking is a different story altogether. Accidentally adding in an extra half teaspoon of baking soda can really throw off the recipe. And that’s largely why it’s so important to learn how to measure dry ingredients properly.

When you’re measuring a small amount of a dry ingredients (teaspoons and tablespoons), you’re going to want to use measuring spoons. Stick the measuring spoon into the dry ingredients and scrape it up against the side of the container to flatten the dry ingredients snugly into the measuring spoon. Use a knife to slide across the top of the measuring spoon to get rid of any extra stuff, and you’re ready to add it in.

For larger amounts of dry ingredients, you’ll want to use measuring cups. Scoop up the dry ingredient into the measuring cup, making sure to pack the ingredient in well. Take flour, for instance. It’s good to use a spoon to make sure it’s packed in tightly in order to ensure that you’re getting the correct amount of flour into the mixing cup. Use the knife trick again to slide it across the top of the measuring cup to remove any excess.

Learning how to measure dry ingredients isn’t terribly difficult, but it is important. These handy tips should help you master the skill in no time.
