If pancakes are a staple weekend treat in your home, you should try to mix it up a little by adding something new and a little different to the repertoire. Crepes are a common dish in Europe, originating in France and spreading in popularity to places as far as Russia and South America. Crepes are eaten in a variety of ways – sometimes plain; many times with fruit and sweet fillings; and sometimes with savory fillings like chicken, cheese, mushrooms, or even egg. Because they’re such a versatile dish, it’s great to be able to use it to create quick innovative meals, whether you’re whipping up a brunch for friends or just making a quick meal for the kids.
If you’ve ever tried to make crepes, you know that they can be difficult to get the hang of because they’re so thin. You need the right tools to start, but you also need to understand how to work with the batter in order to get the perfect crepes every time. Luckily, we know how to help you out.
How to Make Crepes
Crepes are a fairly simple dish to make and require about the same amount of ingredients that you’d need for pancakes or waffles – and most of them are things you always have stocked in your pantry at all times. Start by rounding up everything you need:
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup of all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1/2 cup of milk
- 2 Tablespoons of butter (melted)
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
Add the milk, eggs, water, and melted butter into a large bowl and whisk together until mixed completely. Next, add in the salt and sift in the flour, whisking as you add in the dry ingredients to make sure everything is mixed in together. Sift in the flour slowly so that the batter doesn’t get lumpy.
Once the batter is mixed together and ready to go, heat some butter over a large skillet over medium high heat. Use approximately 1/4 cup of batter per crepe (once you’ve done a few, you’ll be able to eyeball it pretty accurately).
To ensure that the batter is spread evenly throughout the pan, pick up the skillet and tilt it in a circle until the batter covers the entire bottom of the pan. Let the crepe cook for about two minutes or until the bottom is a golden brown. Use a spatula to slide it under the crepe to flip it and cook the other side for another minute or two. Repeat this process for the rest of the batter.
To serve, you can add savory ingredients in the middle, tuck in the sides, and wrap up the crepe like a burrito. For brunch crepes, serve flat and with a variety of fruit and sweet toppings and let people choose whatever spread they want. It’s easy, tasty, and fun for everyone.
