Have you ever made your own BBQ sauce? If you’re like me, then it’s one of those things that you almost never think about beforehand. Instead, popping over to your local grocery store in a pinch to pick up some already made sauce. But BBQ sauce is actually really simple to make; almost all of the ingredients are things that you probably already have in your pantry; and BBQ sauce provides a great base from which to add some culinary innovation. All in all, there’s around four different types of BBQ sauce around the country: Sweet BBQ sauce (made from a tomato and sugar base); Vinegar based sauce (popular in North Carolina); a mustard based BBQ sauce (popular in South Carolina); and a white BBQ sauce (that uses mayo as a base).

Regardless of what your preference is, the most common type of BBQ sauce that you’ll find pretty much anywhere is the standard tomato based sauce. And that’s what we’re going to teach you how to make today.

How to Make BBQ Sauce

To make a truly traditional BBQ sauce, start by sauteing 1/2 of an onion, diced, in butter in a pot over low heat. Cook them slowly, so you don’t burn the onions, but instead bring them to a golden finish. Once the onions are done cooking, add in 2 cups of ketchup; 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar; 1/4 cup of Worcestershire sauce; 1/4 cup of brown sugar; 2 tablespoons of mustard; 1/2 teaspoon of pepper; and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Stir well, making sure all of the ingredients are mixed together and bring the ingredients to a boil.

Keep stirring while the sauce comes to a boil, and once it begins boiling, turn the heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes. The sauce should reduce and begin to thicken.

Make sure you taste test the sauce before taking off heat and serving. You may be used to a stronger vinegar flavor, while someone else may prefer a sweeter taste. You can add more of a certain ingredient if you prefer a slightly different flavor.

When you feel confident with this BBQ sauce, use it as a starting point to try new flavors. For instance, add peppers or try a more savory spice addition. You can also add whisky for a smokier flavor – just be sure to let it cook down before serving.
