Americans have been getting healthier – or at least there’s been a bigger focus on trying to eat healthier. You almost can’t turn around without reading about the latest superfood craze that’s being incorporated into every restaurant menu or running into the growing number of local farmers markets and CSA groups that are cropping up in neighborhoods across the U.S.
Yet all the while, fast food menus keep getting stranger and more over-the-top with restaurants like KFC and Taco Bell introducing calorie and carb-packed monstrosities seemingly designed only to shock consumers into buying food for the sheer novelty of it. Regardless of whether Americans are actually eating healthier, fast food restaurants are still cranking out some pretty extreme food options. And these are the five most ridiculous fast food concoctions we’ve ever seen.
1. KFC’s Double Down Dog
Debuted at the beginning of this year, KFC’s Double Down Dog decided that hot dog buns weren’t really necessary and replaced it with… a fried chicken breast. That’s right – it was a hot dog wrapped in fried chicken and topped with melted cheese sauce.
2. Taco Bell’s Naked Crispy Taco
Following in the footsteps of KFC, Taco Bell decided to hop on the fried chicken bandwagon and introduced the Naked Crispy Taco just a few short months ago. The Naked Crispy Taco replaces a traditional taco shell with a curved, flat fried chicken shell. Top it with seasoned meat, some vegetables, and shredded cheese and you’ve pretty much got this wrapped up.
3. 7-Eleven’s Doritos Loaded
While 7-Eleven isn’t technically a fast food joint, it does sell some questionable fast food options, the latest of which is the bastard child of doritos, melted nacho cheese, and a deep fryer. Doritos Loaded takes a snack chip that’s already unhealthy, tops it off nacho cheese (the kind that’s unnaturally yellow), and deep fries it into a sort of hot breaded cheese ball.
4. Carl Jr.’s Double Loaded Omelette Biscuit
Carl Jr. took the idea that breakfast should be the biggest meal of the day and really ran with it. Their Double Loaded Omelette Biscuit features a whopping two omelettes, sausage, bacon, ham, and three kinds of cheese (American, Cheddar, and Jack) and sandwiches it in between a country style biscuit.
5. Tim Horton’s Buffalo Crunch Donut
Last summer, Tim Horton’s rolled out a buffalo crunch donut exclusively for their booth at the New York State Fair. And while there hasn’t been mass adoption of this breakfast (?) food at any of the actual stores, there’s talk about making this a regular menu item. This monstrosity is basically a massive donut, topped with hot sauce, and sprinkled with crushed up spicy potato chips. It also comes with ranch dipping sauce, in case the hot sauce is a little too much for your taste buds.
