Getting Familiar With Bakeware

Bakeware is the foundation of making tasty treats. Sure, there would be no lovin’ from the oven without regard to ingredients and the very careful measurement of said ingredients, but bakeware is very important. One of the most important roles bakeware plays in the baking process is how heat is passed through the baked goods. If the bakeware is wrong, it could affect the final product. A pan that is too shallow could pass the heat through to the center too quickly. A pan that is too deep could leave the center raw within the specified cooking time. In an ideal world we would have access to every shape and size of baking pan we needed, and I don’t know about you, but the ideal world often escapes me and I end up having all the pans except the one I need.

That isn’t to say that the pans I have can’t be retrofitted to the recipe I am making. Pan substitution is do-able. All that is needed is to be able to measure a pan’s volume to make sure that the pan I choose is similar enough to the pan that is specified by the recipe. I may have to tweak the baking time and/or baking temperature a little if the new pan is taller or shorter, but that is really all. Bakeware conversion is easy if you know how to measure the pans you have. With the help of the folks at fix.com, the infographic below gives you all the details about bakeware equivalency and even shows how to do all the measurements of a pan.
