Move over white rice! A whole new culinary world is opening up every day. As these new innovations in rice spread across the world diners will be experiencing something new wow moments. Who would have thought that rice could come is some many colors. Applying these new rice varieties to the classics will certainly be interesting, but the sky is the limit to the new dishes that will be created. Even the names sound interesting. “Forget the Husband Rice” Sounds delish for a ladies night out and may make a great rice pudding for when the ladies are scorned!
Forget commercial labels that simply indicate regional origins and harvest lands (Thung Kula, Pathum Thani, Suphan Buri, Sun Pa Tong and Surin, for examples), most of the new species now come with imaginative pseudonyms to reflect their captivating signature characteristics. The trademark monikers include khao hom nin (literally aromatic black rice), khao sam see (tri-coloured rice), khao luem phua (forget-the-husband rice) and khao mun poo (crab-fat rice).
